Background of the study
Illegal logging is a pervasive problem that contributes to environmental degradation and adversely affects rural livelihoods. In Afikpo North, unregulated tree felling for commercial gain has led to significant forest loss and diminished natural resources (Chidoka, 2023). Rural communities dependent on forest resources for fuel, food, and income are facing economic hardships due to reduced resource availability and ecological imbalance (Nwankwo, 2024). The clandestine nature of illegal logging makes it difficult to monitor and control, thereby undermining local efforts toward sustainable forest management. Recent research highlights that sustainable management practices and stringent law enforcement can mitigate these negative impacts (Chidoka, 2023). This study will explore how illegal logging disrupts rural livelihoods, assessing both economic and environmental dimensions, and propose viable intervention strategies to promote sustainable resource management (Nwankwo, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Afikpo North Local Government Area is grappling with the adverse effects of illegal logging, which has led to significant environmental degradation and economic instability in rural communities. The loss of forest resources due to unregulated logging activities has disrupted traditional livelihoods, reduced income, and increased vulnerability to environmental shocks. Despite existing laws, enforcement remains weak, and the full socio-economic impact of illegal logging is not fully documented. This study seeks to identify the extent of the problem and evaluate the relationship between illegal logging and rural livelihood challenges (Chidoka, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the extent of illegal logging in Afikpo North.

  2. To evaluate its impact on rural livelihoods.

  3. To recommend sustainable resource management interventions.

Research questions:

  1. What is the extent of illegal logging in Afikpo North?

  2. How does illegal logging affect rural livelihoods?

  3. What sustainable interventions can mitigate the negative impacts of illegal logging?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Illegal logging is significantly reducing forest cover in Afikpo North.

  2. The decline in forest resources adversely affects rural incomes and livelihoods.

  3. Effective law enforcement and sustainable practices can reduce illegal logging impacts.

Significance of the study
The study will provide critical insights into the socio-economic impacts of illegal logging, supporting the development of targeted interventions to promote sustainable forest management. The findings will benefit policymakers, rural communities, and conservation agencies by informing strategies to enhance rural livelihoods (Nwankwo, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the impact of illegal logging on rural livelihoods within Afikpo North Local Government Area.

Definitions of terms:

  • Illegal Logging: Unauthorized harvesting of trees.

  • Rural Livelihoods: The means by which rural populations secure food and income.

  • Sustainable Resource Management: Practices that ensure long-term resource availability.
